Bring History to Life with a School Tour
Regular School Tours
Our regular school tours offer students an immersive and educational experience as they explore the history and architecture of the Meux Home Museum. During these tours, students will learn about the daily life of the Victorian era, the significance of the home, and how it reflects the culture of the time. The tour is led by our experienced docents, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive overview of the house, its artifacts, and the role it played in local history.
Hands-On Learning Series
Our Learning Series tours offer a unique opportunity to combine a general museum tour with a hands-on, interactive learning experience. This program is designed to give students a deeper understanding of the past by engaging them with activities that were common in the 1880s. The lessons focus on daily life and the tools and games that children of the era would have used, making history come to life.
How the Learning Series Works
Students will be divided into five groups and rotate through five different activity stations, each lasting 8-10 minutes. A bell will signal when it’s time to rotate, and each group will have the chance to experience all of the activities. The activities are designed to engage students in practical ways, helping them connect with the past in a memorable and fun manner.
Activity Stations Include:
Written, Oral, and Visual Communication:
- Writing with fountain pens
- Practicing math on slates
- Using a candlestick telephone to practice speaking
- Viewing photographs through a Stereopticon and view master
- Typing on an antique typewriter (students will type their first and last name)
Children’s Games and Play:

- Marbles
- Jacks
- Checkers
- Dominoes
